This Weeks Tasting Details Friday 21st June 2013 5-8pm
Box Grove 2012 Prosecco (Goulburn Valley Vic) $24-
Prosecco is both a grape variety and the name given to the fresh, aromatic sparkling wine it creates—wine designed to be opened spontaneously and enjoyed young. Box Grove’s first harvest of prosecco grapes has produced a wine bursting with the aromatic flavours of apple and pear, finishing with an exuberant hint of lemon zest. Its gentle bubbles and low alcohol make prosecco perfect for any time of the day—a relaxed brunch, a light lunch, a pre-dinner aperitif—or simply shared with friends for no particular reason at all.
Box Grove 2010 Roussanne (Goulburn Valley Vic) $28-
Roussanne produces complex and elegant white wines with delicious flavours of ripe pear, quince and fig. The fruit was picked ripe and fermented “wild” in aged barrels, then left it on yeast lees, stirring regularly for the next nine months until bottling. These simple techniques have given the palate a complexity and minerality and make it a great food wine. Enjoy it with fish, seafood and poultry dishes, or a bowl of steaming hot pasta and risotto.
Box Grove 2012 Shiraz/Roussanne (Goulburn Valley Vic) $28-
In traditional Rhone blends a splash of white grapes is often found in with the reds. Interestingly, if picked, fermented and matured together, the whites can deepen the colour extraction and add complexity and perfume to the final blend! The shiraz and roussanne grapes used to make this wine were grown side-by side, harvested and fermented together then aged for a year in a mixture of old and new French oak barriques before bottling. The wines produced tend to be flavoursome and elegant, not overoaked blockbusters. To be enjoyed with a simple meal – a barbecue, a roast, slow-cooked lamb shanks or pasta—and shared with friends.
Fairbank 2008 Syrah (Bendigo Vic) $24-
When you see the term Syrah instead of Shiraz you can tell that the winemaker is trying to recreate an old world style of wine and not the typical blockbuster Australian style. Hardly surprising to find out that winemakere Gilles Lapulus is from France and his version of Australia’s favourite red, is inspired by the wines of the Rhone. It’s earthy with pronounced redcurrant and raspberry, some spice and a savoury intensity. Nicely textured with good fruit, spice and tannin harmonising well with the natural acids.
Sutton Grange 2009 “Giove” Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet (Bendigo Vic) $55-
A sangiovese made with a European sensibility aiming for overall savouriness, smelling and tasting of soil: undergrowth, fungal, wild herbs, mint, wild spice drawn together tightly with minerality. A meat lover’s wine.
A $2 tasting fee applies for this wine, refundable on any purchase
Sutton Grange 2007 “Rams Horns Block” Syrah (Bendigo Vic) $60-
Dark and intense colour with purple hue. Very good intensity, the first approach is quite reductive, opening up to more fruit, spice ,floral, and animal notes. After aeration the nose evolves towards more fruit and floral with more spice and vanilla, whisky notes. Rich, and textural the impression shows good concentration, a strong structure with good volume. The tannins are quite intense but very soft and long. The aromas are moving towards the fruit spectrum (blackberry, black currant) and some dark flowers.

Little Zac Update Jan 2013
Zac's now been in hospital for more than 6 months. He is doing very well but have had some set backs in the process. We have now moved to Royal children's hospital. And are currently receiving his 6th round of chemo with stem cell return ( which he had a brief stay at RCH a few months ago to harvest his own stem cells ). The chemo he is having is practically toxic and the stem cells help him recover. During Zac stay at RCH he had a sezuire which was caused by his DI a form of diebetes which affects his sodium levels. Basically it became to high and dropped too quickly. We managed to get home for Christmas which was very special and our daughter Hayley was super excited to have her little brother home. Zac's sight has returned. And his speech is getting better daily, but unfortantly the chemo has started to affect his hearing. He still can't walk or stand unassisted but are receiving physio and OT a few times a week to build up his strength. With one more round of chemo and then radiation treatment we feel Zac is on the right track as his MRI results keep showing improvement
Thank You! Over $5000 raised at our Fundraising Tasting!
In July this year, Zac’s childcare teacher rang parents Joel and Sally Mason saying Zac was not well. After a quick thought that it could just be a bout of gastro, a visit to hospital become a struggle for life. Nothing could prepare the family for the following weeks where beautiful young Zac had 2 brain operations, a mild stroke losing his sight, his mobility and ability to communicate in any way, then being placed on life support. He was close to losing his life.
I also have a 3 year old boy, who considers Zac his playmate and as a parent I can only imagine the heart breaking anguish if I was faced with the same situation. Like all of us we felt helpless. The family are doing it pretty tough but are putting up a good fight, and Zac is now showing signs of improvement, but as I’m sure you are aware, their road will be long and tough. They also have an 8 year old daughter who is missing her brother who is hospital bound indefinitely and has been now for over 3 months. Their plight has been in the media lately via newspapers, news items and other media.
